When you wish to step up and plan a backcountry ski tour with some friends or your university outdoor program you need to make sure you have the right skill set. No better to place to start then the Cascade Powder Cat's yurt high about Martin Creek in a spectacular environment that provides abundant learning opportunities, this comprehensive course is truly rewarding. We look at snow metamorphism, guidelines and recording standards for weather, snow packs and avalanche observations; route selection and decision making, avalanche recognition, snow profiles and evaluation, bonding tests, “The test profile,” and route finding considerations for the professional mountain guide, snow rangers or ski patrollers. Our goal is to develop safe, self-reliant ski-mountaineers ready to climb and ski locally or in the great ranges of the world. This course is truly an excellent foundation for any skier seeking independence in the alpine arena.
Course curriculum includes: - Terrain management (safe, efficient, fast) w/ up hill track, & downhill
- Snow climbing& self arrest techniques
- Snow anchor selection, construction, and equalization
- Rappelling and rope management
- Navigation using maps, altimeters, and compasses
- Mountain weather, alpine ecology, hazard assessment, and Leave No Trace Ethics
- Observation and recording of factors that affect or indicate snow stability
- Weather, snowpack, and avalanche activity
- Use of less formal field data as well as formalized data gathering
- Stability analysis, forecasting and ratings
- Avalanche release and skier triggering concepts

Our Level One Avalanche Courses are a one evening and two day course with an emphasis on learning about snow mechanics, hazard evaluation techniques, and developing your avalanche judgment for the backcountry. This course is designed for all types of backcountry travelers, snowshoers, backcountry skiers, snowboarders, and mountaineers. Includes the full AIARE Level I certification course, 2 nights lodging in our Yurt at 5000', the Cat ride in and out, AIARE (American Institute for Avalanche Research and Education) curriculum and workbook, and a couple of cat runs conditions permitting. No epic ski story starts out, "So we were sitting in traffic and..." Does traffic, expensive tickets, long lift lines, and no fresh tracks have you eying the untracked lines of the backcountry? Experience the thrill of fresh tracks after an energizing skin through beautiful terrain you would not encounter in the resorts. We understand why you want and need these new skills because, years ago we too felt the pull of the mountains and powder stashes beyond the boundaries of resorts. In partnership with the Cascade Powder Cat crew, there cozy yurt, amd amazing terrain, we now offer our School Bus Intro to ski touring. Now is you chance to see what it is all about. This course is 2 full days and will cover the essentials for traveling efficiently and safely in back country terrain. We focus on use of your back country gear including touring skis and skins, split boards, and snowshoes.We help you learn how to prepare and plan for a tour, how to select appropriate terrain, and how to use your gear properly to safely navigate your way through avalanche terrain. This is not an avalanche course but rather a focus on the hard skills of touring in uncontrolled terrain. Partner this with one our AIARE Level I avalanche courses for a complete overview of basic backcountry skiing and snowboarding. We offer custom ski touring courses and guiding paired with deluxe service and food out of our Yurt. These courses are great for folks looking to explore the far reaches of our property and gain skills as a backcountry skier or snowboarder.
Any course we offer places a heavy emphasis on proper tour planning and safe route finding. If you are starting to ski beyond resort boundaries, our custom courses and guided adventures will give you the skills and confidence you need. |
